Bobby Robinson

I met Bobby Robinson on one of my frequent trips to Chicago. He filled out the three Negro League musketeers of Chicago alongside Double Duty Radcliffe and Lester Lockett. The three of them would go to a southern food diner on the Southside quite often. It was a beautiful friendship, Duty and Lester would tease the others, Bobby wouldn’t take part in teasing anyone but he would laugh endearingly. He was just too kind to demean anyone.

Bobby was one of the most sensitive people I've ever met. He was about 87 when I first met him. He was about 5'11”, very slim stood straight as an arrow and appeared very spry and youthful. He was so quiet and respectful. He was a bricklayer after baseball and actually said he would build me a grill on my terrace in NYC.

He was a third baseman starting with the Indianapolis ABCs and played with numerous other teams including the Birmingham Black Barons. He was a great fielder, but a light hitter. Bobby lived to be 98 and passed away in 2002.

A beautiful gentleman who was such a gentle man.
